Jehovah- Rophe is the Lord, our Healer. Exodus tells us that after Moses led Israel through the Red Sea they went into the wilderness of Shur. The people went for three days without finding water. When they came to Marah, they couldn’t drink the water because of its bitterness. Moses cried out to the Lord on behalf of Israel. The Lord pointed Moses to a tree and when the tree was cast into the water, the waters were made sweet. The Lord told them, “If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
While traveling in Israel, I had the opportunity to travel into Jordan and to visit Marah, where the Lord Himself performed this great miracle and gave Himself this name. Marah is just down from Petra. The photo at right will show you the area of this great miracle and testimony of God.
The word, Rophe, means to heal, restore, or cure and occurs 67 times in the Old Testament. God gave Himself this name and is the source of all healing.
Rophe refers to physical healing sometimes, but most often it means healing the body, mind, and soul. God also heals sin and He heals the broken-hearted. Psalm 103: 1-5,
“Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies our mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
God didn’t just promise to heal. He said healing is what I am!
